Silver foxes and crones: Why are women the only ones told to fight aging?
Beauty is swapping ‘anti-aging’ for ‘longevity.’ Fight the years or don’t. Either way, here’s what actually works.

A man goes gray and gets promoted to silver fox. A woman goes gray and the internet sends her a coupon for root concealer. Somewhere along the way, men were told they age like whiskey and women were told they age like milk. We would like to speak to the manager.
So let us ask the question nobody at the beauty counter asks: Why are we fighting this at all? Aging is not a malfunction. It is the reward for not dying, and frankly, most of us worked hard for every one of these laugh lines.
Here is the good news. Even the industry is softening its battle cry. L’Oréal chief executive Nicolas Hieronimus has said the future of beauty lies in longevity, moving customers from correcting damage to preventing it, with products from brands including Lancôme and Vichy. Translation: The world’s biggest beauty company has quietly retired the war metaphors. Nobody is “combating” anything anymore. We are “supporting skin health.” It is the same moisturizer with better manners.
And women are already voting with their mornings. An Avon consumer report found 63% of women prefer to use no more than three products, and the average morning routine has shrunk from about 22 minutes in 2020 to 14 minutes in 2025, according to figures cited by industry analysts. Turns out we have places to be.
Our official position: Fight it, don’t fight it, fight it on Tuesdays. All three are correct. Wear the gray or book the colorist. Get the filler or get the reading glasses on a beaded chain. Nobody gets to grade you on how you age, including you.
But if you do choose to fight it, here is what you should know. After menopause, falling estrogen means less collagen, thinner and drier skin and slower repair. Expensive serums cannot outvote biology, but a few things genuinely help.
-
Sunscreen is the whole ballgame. A broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher every morning, rain or shine, does more for your face than anything in a gold jar.
Aging is not a malfunction. It is the reward for not dying.
-
A retinoid earns its reputation. Start a few nights a week and build up slowly; expect some flaking while your skin adjusts. Skip it if your skin is very sensitive, and ask a dermatologist if you are unsure.
-
Moisturize like you mean it. Look for ceramides, glycerin or hyaluronic acid to help your skin barrier hold on to water.
-
Be suspicious of miracles. If a product promises to turn back the clock, the only thing getting younger is your bank balance’s patience.
-
Hormones matter to your skin too. If menopause symptoms are on your list anyway, ask your provider how hormone therapy might affect your skin as part of the bigger conversation.
Then go outside, wear the sunscreen and enjoy the face you have earned. Silver fox is a job title. We are claiming it.
