Let’s be honest. Nobody loves a freebie like a veteran. We were trained to never pass up free chow, a free nap or a free T-shirt, and that instinct does not retire with the DD-214. Once a year, the universe rewards it. Veterans Day is Wednesday, Nov. 11, and the VA has verified its annual list of deals as of Oct. 22. Here are the highlights, in order of how fast you should move.

First, the ground rules. Most offers require proof of service, so pack your VA health ID, veteran ID card, a DD-214 copy or a driver’s license with a veteran designation. Deals vary by location, so call ahead. And yes, you may hit more than one spot. This is a mission, not a meal.

Chow line: Red Robin is serving veterans and active-duty members a free Red’s Big Tavern Burger with bottomless fries, dine-in only. Bottomless. Plan your day accordingly. Ruby Tuesday offers a free meal from its Everyday Fresh menu, worth up to $17.99. Rubio’s is doing buy one entree, get one free in store with code VETS26, which means you can treat your battle buddy or, let’s be real, yourself twice.

Grooming standards: Great Clips gives veterans and active-duty members a free haircut on Nov. 11. Bonus intel: Anyone getting a cut that day can ask for a free haircut card to give to a veteran. Send your family in first and make them earn their keep.

Nobody loves a freebie like a veteran.

Supply run: Kohl’s offers 30% off in store Nov. 10-11 for military members, veterans and their families with valid ID. Exclusions apply, because of course they do.

One more thing: Someone at a register will ask whether the discount is for your husband. Smile, slide your ID across the counter and say, “Nope, it’s for me.” Then order the bottomless fries. You earned every one of them.
